About Ruang Therapy

The Story Behind "Ruang"

Ruang means “space” in Malay — a reflection of the safe space therapy offers. Within this space, therapy is collaborative: therapist and client work together as partners toward a shared outcome. Our work aims to facilitate exploration, discovery, insight, and clarity.

Common Curiosities About Therapy

The first session, usually called an intake, is typically about getting to know each other. Your therapist will explain how the process works, discuss important policies, and ask about what brings you to the session. You may raise concerns and discuss any preferences. Your therapist will work together with you to understand your concerns and develop a way forward.

Individual therapy: Intake session will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes; subsequent sessions will take about 50 minutes.

Couples therapy: Intake session will take about 1 hour 50 minutes; subsequent sessions will take about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Frequency and duration: It is recommended to attend sessions on a weekly basis. The journey in therapy may last for weeks, months or years. You may discuss your needs and concerns with your therapist to build a workable plan.

You do not need a severe crisis or a diagnosed mental health condition to seek therapy. Many people attend therapy to improve their quality of life, learn how to manage stress, navigate transitions (for e.g., a career change or a loss of someone close), relationship or friendship issues, self-improvement, and the list goes on. Your reasons could be different and therapy could offer the space you need to talk about it.

Therapy, or counselling, involves working with a licensed mental health practitioner to address emotional and psychological challenges. Therapy provides a safe space to talk about your struggles and it offers support to navigate through these challenges. Psychiatrists are trained as medical doctors specializing in mental health disorders. They tend to treat patients who struggle with more severe conditions and would usually prescribe medication for symptom management.

Currently, these services are not available here. We are not able to diagnose a mental health condition, prescribe or sell any medication.

Unfortunately, these services are not available here. Sessions are only done by appointment basis. The therapist may provide some support through email or Whatsapp, within the limitations of her availability. The rates offered are already within reasonable and affordable range, in comparison to market practice. Please do not hesitate to reach out to discuss any concerns you may have.

Come prepared to be open and honest with your therapist. Therapy may be uncomfortable as it will uncover underlying issues and address topics that are not always easy to talk about. It is important to communicate with your therapist and bring up any concerns or curiosities that may arise.

Therapy may bring about uncomfortable and unpleasant feelings and memories. Just like any process of healing, it may sometimes feel worse before it gets better. Be open to share about any discomfort you may be experiencing and work with your therapist to make adjustments. In the event that things are not working out and you wish to discontinue, please speak about this with your therapist for a referral or a different plan to support you better.

Rescheduling of sessions may be done with at least 48 hours’ of notice, with valid reasons. The fee that has been paid will then be carried forward to the new session date. Cancellations will lead to a forfeiture of the fee.
